Wata for Wellbodi!

Project 1808 students discovered a nearby community in need of a well. Now, they are working hard to construct a well and improve their access to water!

This is just one example of how our students are succeeding inside and outside of the classroom. Stay tuned for more updates on this initiative — Wata for Wellbodi — building wells and improving water quality in Kabala and other communities in Sierra Leone.

New Desks at DEC School in Kabala

Generous support from Mr. Mohamed Hardy Sesay (TBZ) to our Desk-to-Classroom initiative has provided DEC school in Kabala, Koinadugu District, Sierra Leone with new desks for their classrooms!

Our Desk-to-Classroom initiative– one of our Project 1808 Education initiatives — is an effort to create a more suitable environment for learning at local schools in Kabala. The desks are made using local materials by Project 1808 students and staff.

First Annual Science and Leadership Festival 2016

Kabala, Koinadugu District, Sierra Leone — Project 1808 planned and facilitated the first ever Science and Leadership festival at the Kabala Community Center from Jan. 4-6 2016.

The festival was attended by over 400 students who participated in the three-day festival in which they participated in activities related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). There was also a day dedicated to leadership in which students reflected on the characteristics of a good leader while studying well-known African and African American leaders from the past.

The festival’s activities were planned in conjunction with Project 1808’s student chapter at the University of Wisconsin and implemented by our Student Leader team from local secondary schools.

Wisconsin Science Festival – Ebola in Context

World health leaders warn that the aftermath of the recent Ebola crisis presents a critical moment to develop strategies for future infectious disease outbreaks. Join a wide-ranging group of world-renowned experts as they revisit the Ebola crisis and discuss future global health emergencies. Presenters include virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka, research fellow Alhaji N’jai and historian of science Gregg Mitman, who will present excerpts from his gripping short documentary In the Shadow of Ebola.
