Sustainability and Innovation Camp (SIC)

The first ever Sustainability Innovation Camp (SIC) was held in May 2013 in Kabala, Sierra Leone and brought ten University of Wisconsin-Madison students together with counterparts from the University of Sierra Leone to build workable models of community sustainability alongside of more than two hundred primary and secondary school students.

Since its initial offering, the camp has become an annual event, one which is aimed at renewing or reviving the spirit of optimism, progress, hope, creativity, and innovation among natives in one of the least developed places of the world. This camp provides hands on experiences for over 200 primary and secondary school students to engage in critical thinking to generate pragmatic solutions in much needed areas including but not limited to:

  • Solar energy
  • Water resources
  • Sanitation
  • Waste management
  • Nutrition
  • Micro-finance
  • Health
