From the controversy over Invisible Children’s 2012 Kony campaign to the 1 MIllion T-shirt campaign and TOMS Shoes,among others, critics of international aid argue that foreign aid does more damage to beneficiaries than good. Some argue that at best, aid provides short term unsustainable solutions and at worst, evades beneficiary governments from responsibility and accountability for their country’s development. While critics also argue that this inherently reinforces poor leadership, others are insistent that western countries must change the language and approach around aid by working WITH beneficiaries, learning from them rather than imposing western ideas of solutions.
